Bye-Bye Quiet Books

Update: Please see Simply Fresh Designs DropBox for Download of quiet books.

The unfortunate news for today is thus: I cannot continue to share the quiet books with content from lds.org. Although I’ve tried very carefully to be honest and follow the lds.org terms of use, it appears the LDS Intellectual Property Division didn’t agree. They contacted me and said that images and text from lds.org are for individuals to create their own projects but not to distribute to others. Sharing or distributing anything I create using their images didn’t meet their terms of use, even though I wasn’t making any money.

Also, for your information, the IP Division said that printing quiet books, which contain lds.org content, through a professional print shop, such as Costco, was fine, as long as they were for immediate family only. The sharing of files with others was the violation.

Bottom line, I am having to indefinitely pull all posts and files for Quiet Books and Primary Sharing Time Monthly Themes. The LDS Church does have a process to request permission to use their content in this manner, and I plan to look into that, but I’m not holding my breath that such approval will ever come to pass.

So – for now. I apologize. I’m sad because I know thousands of you around the world enjoyed these quiet books. I feel selfish keeping them all to myself. I hope you can continue the tradition by creating your own books for your families. I’d be happy to create other quiet books in the future with original text and artwork (anyone out there want to volunteer to be the artist?!)… but we’ll see how things go after I have my baby in August.

Keep checking back for updates and new items going into the shop soon.

How sad. I was just getting ready to download your newest one!! Do you know how to contact them and express our sadness? We are continually asked to share our talents to help spread the gospel and now they are asking you not to. For those of us not talented in this area, we are going to miss out on your unselfishness.

Oh, that is so sad! I get where you are coming from. I get where the IPD is coming from, too, though. I wonder if enough of us wrote in and expressed how wonderful your creation was??? ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for what you did, though. My boys LOVE the five I was able to print out. I was looking forward to the Old Testament one…oh well.

Sad indeed! I’m glad I downloaded the new one on my parents’ computer. I didn’t get around to getting it on mine yet. I love that you have shared your talent with us. Maybe if you tell us the topics of each card we can submit original work or pics we have taken that might match and you could still make them.
I hope all goes well with your new little one!

  14. Janice

I am SO sad!!!! Thank you, thank you for being kind enough to share your talents with us! I had downloaded one of the quiet books and it’s a BIG help in getting my kids to be quite during Sacrament meeting.

Maybe there is a talented pean who would be willing to do drawing for your books? I would pay $ for then, they are awesome! You are so very talented!!!
it’s kinda ironic- it was On my list od things to do today was to download the new quiet book! : (

  16. Alison

Oh that makes me so sad. Your work is fabulous and we love our quiet books. I’m so glad I got your most recent one before you had to take it down. 19. JaNae
    JaNae says:

Oh so sad! Thank you for all your work and for finding such a great way to share your talents. I like the idea of printing them without the picture…maybe letting older kids illustrate? It would make a great faith in god or personal progress project. Good luck finding new avenues to feel fulfillment and share your talents…and I hope they still involve all of us who remain strangers with common pursuits!!!

  20. Jen
    Jen says:

Oh, dear. This is tragic. I LOVED your quiet books. I, thankfully, had all of them downloaded too, except the newest one. So I’m asking for you to share your knowledge. How did you get the pictures from lds.org and save them into a printable format. I think the most recent ones that you did, the bright ideas, would be doable, since I wouldn’t have to add any text. Anyway, just thought I’d see if there was an easy way to do it. I also was looking forward to the Old Testament one. Sad day.

  21. Amy @ MoMomma
    Amy @ MoMomma says:

I am sad as well but completely understand. If you decide to go forward with your own quiet books, please post about what you are looking for. I know there are many photographers out there (like myself) who would be willing to donate their time and talent and submit a photo for such a cause!

    Nicki says:

Thank you so much for sharing all your hard work. We have loved the quiet books that you shared on your blog and will miss any future ones! Hopefully, lds.org will change their policy– your projects were so much cuter than almost all other LDS content I’ve seen online. Blessing to you in all you do!

  24. Quimby
    Quimby says:

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you aren’t in any serious trouble (eg having to pay a fine) for the work you have done. The books were simply lovely; I wish there was some way this could be resolved so that you could continue to offer them.

  25. kristi
    kristi says:

This was on my project list too. What you shared was so beautiful. If there is a way for you to still post ideas for us to complete or “fill in the blanks” that would be awesome…but might be too much trouble for you.

  26. Ashlee
    Ashlee says:

Oh no! I’m so sad to hear the news. ๐Ÿ™ Thanks for all you did. We have sure loved the couple we have received through you. You have a talent and gift. 27. Sara

Oh, darn it! That is so sad! Especially since you put all that hard work into making these for us. But we understand that you have to follow their rules. I still hope you can find a way to continue doing them and I look forward to your upcoming ideas & projects. Thank you!

I’m so sad too. Thank you for being so kind to include others in your creativity. I found that these were great to use to share the gospel and I’m grateful for the ones I have for my little ones. Thanks again!

  30. Tori
    Tori says:

I’m very sad too. I downloaded the BoM stories for my kids and had them printed. They love them. So if I understand this correctly, I can still print all I want for my own personal use (not reselling of course) but you as the website administrator cannot distribute anymore? Sad, sad day, but I understand and commend you for doing the right thing.

  31. Tracy
    Tracy says:

I am just sick about the loss of your great talents for those fantastic quiet books. I do understand both sides and respect your for decision to take them off the site. I just wished that the IPD understood that there are many of us that don’t have anything even close to your talent in this area and are very sad to loose such a great tool to teach children and help keep them quiet in a gospel oriented way during sacrament meeting.

  32. Marcie
    Marcie says:

Oh darn it! That is SUCH a bummer! I just found out about your site and only got ONE book done! I have to ask too…..is it a violation if you send them via e-mail? I would LOVE to get the other ones. We use them in Primary and Sacrament all the time. You are SO amazing and talented and I am just thankful I got one book instead of none! Thanks for all you did!

  33. Lucy Drake
    Lucy Drake says:

Thanks so much for sharing your creative, inspired work with us to download and use for our families. I had already printed off some for my grandchildren. From what I understand, there is no problem for my grandchildren to have them. Right?

  34. Wendy
    Wendy says:

I’m so sad. I was planning on using the new testament one for my primary class since that is what we are learning about this year, but didn’t download it. Bummer. I even linked the prophet one from my blog. I think I saw this comment already, but if it isn’t too much trouble could you post them minus the pictures? Then maybe we can add a picture or at least have the facts. Hopefully you’ll be able to get permission for the entire books. I know lots of people who would benefit & enjoy the books.

  35. Jamie
    Jamie says:

I had just found these today…a friend had passed them back a bench to my kids to look at and we LOVED them, so I wanted to get on here as fast as possible to find them, only to find this. I am so sad, but thank you for your beautiful ideas.

  36. Victoria S.
    Victoria S. says:

Thank you for sharing your talents and time to make those books! I’m glad I got them before they had to be deleted. We have all the sets printed and use them at bedtime each night as our scripture reading time. They are so much easier to read for beginning readers and a great introduction to scripture stories and gospel topics. I love the 4×6 format that we can take to church, read at bedtime and we’ve taken them on trips too. As a Primary president our focus is on the scriptures this year. I got a stuffed animal turtle, put a backpack on him, put a copy of the Book of Mormon quiet book you made inside and send ‘Scripture Turtle’ home with a different family each week. The kids report each Sunday on which stories they read out of the book you made. Several parents have asked for copies and I’ve referred them to your site. I’m so sad you had to take them off your site. Maybe the church could think about publishing your designs officially and make them available to everyone on their website. It was such a great combination of the gospel art pictures and stories, much better than the old cartoon scripture story books. I also just made 2 sets to give to my nephews as baptism gifts. Thank You so much for sharing such a wonderful resource!!!!

  37. K Hunt
    K Hunt says:

I, too, am totally disappointed. I ordered the full sets and when we picked them up, a whole bunch of the pictures were missing. I just went in to reorder them today and it’s no longer available. ๐Ÿ™ Now I have multiple incomplete sets. I have no idea why the full sets didn’t print. I’ve seen several people ask but haven’t seen a response….can they be emailed?

    Thanks.

Just a quick question. I never saw a quiet book here. Is it possible for you to simply photograph the “idea” of the book? I can copy just about anything, but I don’t know what the quiet books are.
    Thanks.

  41. Tyler
    Tyler says:

If you would like any help in trying out the IPD process of having your quiet book files being share-able ask me. I’m sure if you need any help with this anyone of us would be willing to help. It’s worth the shot to try.
Sometimes the Church is a little overprotective it its stuff. The Church is still true, it’s just full of ‘peculiar people’ in it’s administration and it’s members ๐Ÿ™‚

I am SO SAD about this! I bookmarked your site about six months ago, with the idea in mind to come back to it and download your quiet books to use as a resource for my sharing times in Primary, as well as quiet Sacrament Meeting books for my busy almost-2-year-old. I am in desperate need of something for her to look at during that hour each week. I was so in love with them that I even wanted to make several for little Christmas gifts for my family members with children. Is there any way you could email me the books that I can download? I really, really appreciate your art and sharing it with all of us. You are truly an inspiration, and a kind, selfless example to us all. My email address is tkeperkins@gmail.com if you are able to send them to me. Thank you.

I see that others have asked to be emailed the quiet book stuff, it seems like that might be part of sharing files with others that wasn’t okay, but if it isn’t–could you email them to me too? Or is there somewhere I could see a picture or something? I’d like to try to make them myself but have no idea what they were like to even know what they were or how to begin! Thank you!

  135. Chris
    Chris says:

This is a suggestion only, but there is a collaborative, volunteer-driven LDS website run by the Church here:
    https://vineyard.lds.org/

and there is a section on graphics and design (it is not running yet, but soon). Maybe you can propose this idea to them when it is running, or at lease send an email to them now.

While I understand your situation, I also work for another organization that has to keep tabs on all its images and graphics. Unlike you, there are many individuals who would use these images for not the same purposes, and rather than tying up resources in decision-making for each case, the Church has wisely decided to stop all usage.

I commend you for your great artwork and service to others, and admire your ability to find a workaround that follows wise counsel. It’s a little extra work for others, but I hope everyone can appreciate all the work you have done (even without images) and make their own personalized books for their own use.

Thanks for this, and setting a great example,

Hi. I love your design. I understand the nature of copyright and it can be very frustrating. I am a LDS photographer and I would love to collaborate with you on a project where you need high quality images. Here is a link to my blog http://lindseysbriggsphoto.blogspot.com/ . Most of what is show cased there is work I do for clients, but it also contains personal work as well. Working together we could create specific images for your ideas, that way you wouldn’t have to worry about copy right for the images and your designs would be available to give out to anyone who wanted them. I believe in producing beautiful things that invite the spirit and inspire our little ones minds. Your work is beautiful and uplifting. I would love to help you anyway I can.

I am looking into creating a quiet book and saw through Pinterest that you had this experience! I had no idea that these books couldn’t be distributed this way since I have seen them all over the place. Anyway, I checked on the FAQ page on the church’s website and this is what they had to say:
Can I put the image on my blog or website?
Yes! We encourage members to use the images on the Media Library on their blogs and personal websites. And we would love it if you would link the image back to where you found it on the Media Library so others can download it from the Media Library too. Hope this helps you out!
